Which meant I was going to be left alone with my mum.

“Can I go and play at Gabby’s?” I asked, hoping that Mum still wasn’t listening and that I could just run out of the house.

“No you can’t,” she growled. “You’ve got some clearing up to do.”

CHAPTER 10

The trouble with having clearing up to do is I don’t see why I should have had to do it. I mean, it was Mum who dropped the flour on the floor, not me.

Good job I did clear it up, though, because I’m not sure she would have taken me to Chocolate Land at all if I hadn’t.

Once she had changed her trousers and swept up all the floury bits I had missed, her stiffness actually began to unstiffen.

“Are you sure you don’t want to go to Mrs Pike’s Easter egg hunt tomorrow, Daisy?” she said. “I’m baking a Victoria sponge for a picnic in her garden afterwards.”

The trouble with Victoria sponges is they’re not made of chocolate.
